What the Lane County Clerk Does
The Lane County Clerk handles several county functions that are separate from the courts. It runs elections, records real property documents, issues marriage licenses, registers domestic partnerships, and supports the Property Value Appeals Board. Each of these creates records the public can access through the Clerk, not through the court system.
The split is the key point. Court case files, including divorce cases, belong to the Circuit Court records staff. Recordings, marriage licenses, and election records belong to the Lane County Clerk. The county's general public records office holds neither court files nor these Clerk records.
The Clerk's official page lists the office responsibilities, addresses, and hours.

Lane County Clerk Office Locations
The Clerk works from two main locations in Eugene. Recording and marriage licenses moved to the Public Service Building at 125 East 8th Avenue, effective August 21, 2025, on the corner of 8th Avenue and Pearl Street. Elections stayed at 275 West 10th Avenue. Confirm the right address before you go, since the two functions are not in the same building.

Real Property Recording in Lane County
The Clerk's Deeds and Records section records real property documents. These include deeds, contracts, conveyances, liens, and similar instruments tied to land and property. Recorded documents are public and form the chain of title for property in the county. The office can certify copies of recorded documents when you need a certified version for legal use. They are separate from court case records and from the County Assessor's tax and value records.
When you need a copy of a recorded document, the Deeds and Records office is the keeper. Property value disputes, by contrast, route to the Property Value Appeals Board, which the Clerk also supports.
Marriage Licenses and Domestic Partnerships
Marriage licenses come from the Clerk's Marriage License Section. Applicants complete an online application first, then both parties appear in person to sign. A license takes effect three days after signing and stays valid for 60 days. The Clerk also registers domestic partnerships and performs civil ceremonies on most Fridays.
The full marriage process, with the application fields and the certified copy steps, sits on the Lane County marriage and divorce records page. Divorce records, on the other hand, are court files held by the Circuit Court, not the Clerk.
Lane County Clerk Fees
The Clerk publishes set fees for marriage licenses and certified copies. The license fee is nonrefundable. Certified copies cost a fixed amount for the first copy and less for each added copy in the same order.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Marriage license | $60.00, nonrefundable |
| Decorative certificate (optional) | $1.00 |
| First certified copy of marriage license | $7.75 |
| Each additional certified copy, same transaction | $4.00 |
| Civil ceremony | $117.00 |
| Replacement marriage license | $10.00 |
| Three-day waiting period waiver | $10.00, cash only |
Note: Card payments add a 3% processing fee, and American Express is not accepted for these county transactions.
How to Get a Certified Copy from the Lane County Clerk
Certified copies of a marriage license can be ordered at application or later. The steps below cover a request to the Deeds and Records office.
- Decide whether you want the copy at application or after the ceremony.
- If ordered at application, the copy is mailed after the signed license returns to the office.
- To order later, request copies in person or by mail.
- For a mail request, send a check for $7.75 for the first copy and $4 for each added copy.
- Make checks or money orders payable to Lane County Deeds and Records.
- If the license came from another Oregon county, contact that county or the Oregon Center for Health Statistics.
Domestic Partnership Registration
The Lane County Clerk also registers domestic partnerships. This is a separate record type from a marriage license, but it runs through the same Deeds and Records section. A registered domestic partnership creates a legal record the office keeps, and certified copies are available the same way as other recorded documents.
People often confuse the partnership registry with marriage or with court family cases. It is neither. It is a county recording function, distinct from the divorce and family files held by the Circuit Court. If you need a family court case instead, that lives with the court, not the Clerk.
Elections and the Lane County Clerk
Elections are one of the Clerk's core duties. The Elections office stayed at 275 West 10th Avenue when recording moved downtown, and its phone is 541-682-4234. The office runs county voter registration, ballots, and election records. These records are public in the ways state election law allows.
Because elections sit in a different building from recording and marriage, confirm the address before a visit. A voter registration or ballot question goes to the Elections office, while a deed or marriage question goes to Deeds and Records at 125 East 8th Avenue. Mixing the two only adds a trip across downtown Eugene.
Copies of Recorded Lane County Documents
The Deeds and Records office provides copies of recorded documents. A recorded deed, contract, or lien is public, and you can request a copy in person or by mail. For a marriage license copy, a mail request uses the Request for Certified Copy of Marriage License with the proper fee.
Payment methods include cash, checks, money orders, and cards, with a 3% fee on card payments. Checks or money orders for marriage copies are made payable to Lane County Deeds and Records. For records the Clerk does not hold, such as court cases, the request goes to the court instead, as covered on the court records page.
Property Value Appeals Board
The Lane County Clerk supports the Property Value Appeals Board. This board hears appeals about the value the County Assessor places on property. It is the path for a property owner who believes an assessed value is wrong. The Clerk handles the board's filings and records, while the assessment itself comes from the Assessment and Taxation department.
This is one more area where the Clerk's records are separate from court files. A value appeal is not a court case, and it does not run through the Circuit Court.
Records the Lane County Clerk Does Not Hold
The Clerk keeps recording, marriage, and election records, but not everything with the word "county" on it. Several common records belong to other offices, and sending a request to the Clerk only slows the answer. Knowing the split up front is the fastest way to reach the right desk.
- Court cases, including divorce - held by the Lane County Circuit Court.
- Vital records, such as birth and death - held by Vital Statistics.
- Police reports and jail records - held by the Sheriff's Office.
- Assessment and tax records - held by Assessment and Taxation.
- District attorney records - held by the District Attorney.
For court files, use the court records page. For the broader county request process, see public records.
County Clerk Versus Clerk of Court
The two offices sound alike but hold different records. The Lane County Clerk keeps recordings, marriage, and election records. The Clerk of Court function, run by the Circuit Court, keeps court case files. Use the table to send each request to the right place.
| Office | What It Keeps | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Lane County Clerk | Recordings, marriage licenses, elections | This page |
| Clerk of Court (Circuit Court records) | Court case files, registers, certified court copies | Clerk of Court |
For court case searches, see Lane County court records, and for the trial court, see the Circuit Court page.
Finding the Lane County Clerk Downtown
The Recording Office and Marriage License Section now share the downtown courthouse block at 125 East 8th Avenue. That puts marriage, recording, and court records within the same downtown Eugene area, though they remain separate offices.
You can view the courthouse location map to see the downtown block where recording and marriage services now sit.
